Burnout

Burnout prevention that starts before the collapse

Burnout rarely arrives as a breakdown. It arrives as a slow flattening — the work still gets done, but nothing about it lands, and rest stops restoring anything.

The World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon with three parts: exhaustion, mental distance from work, and reduced effectiveness. Naming which part is loudest changes what actually helps.

Early signals worth taking seriously

  • Sunday evening dread that starts earlier each week
  • Exhaustion that a full night's sleep no longer touches
  • Cynicism about work you used to care about
  • Small requests feeling disproportionately heavy
  • Physical symptoms — headaches, gut trouble, tension — with no medical cause

How recovery usually works

  1. 1

    Measure it honestly

The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory separates personal, work-related and client-related burnout, so you can see whether the source is the workload, the role, or the people you serve.

  2. 2

    Change one recovery variable

Sleep, boundaries around after-hours contact, or a genuine break from a specific demand. One sustained change outperforms a full lifestyle overhaul that lasts nine days.

  3. 3

Bring in a professional if it plateaus

If scores stay high after six to eight weeks of changes, burnout is often sitting alongside depression or an anxiety disorder that needs its own treatment.

Burnout is not a character flaw

People who burn out are usually the ones who kept absorbing overflow because they could. The trait that caused it is conscientiousness, not weakness.

That matters practically: advice built on 'try harder' makes burnout worse, because trying harder is the strategy that produced it.

The Indian context

Long commutes, joint-family obligations that continue after work hours, and a culture where leave is negotiated rather than taken all lengthen recovery. So does the expectation of being reachable on a messaging app at 11pm.

Recovery plans that ignore those realities fail. Ours ask what you can actually change this week, and build from there.

Burnout: common questions

How is burnout different from depression?
Burnout is tied to a context — usually work — and often lifts when the context changes. Depression follows you into contexts you used to enjoy and affects appetite, sleep and self-worth broadly. They overlap frequently, which is why screening for both is sensible.
Can I recover from burnout without leaving my job?
Often, yes — but only if something concrete changes about the demands or the recovery time. Recovery without change is a pause, and the exhaustion returns within weeks.
How long does recovery take?
Mild burnout can ease in weeks once sleep and boundaries improve. Severe burnout, especially when it has run for a year or more, typically takes several months and usually benefits from professional support.
What does the CBI measure?
The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory scores personal burnout, work-related burnout and client-related burnout separately, on a 0-100 scale. Saantvana runs it free and shows your subscale breakdown immediately.
